Photoshelter closes its doors and prepares to say fairwell to its 'collection'

  

Not only is it very sad, but also very typical for us that the very week I submit a collection to Photoshelter, I receive an email letting me know that they will be closing the service. Damn!

I really liked the way they operated and the sheer quality they offered under what should be the model for stock images and prints. Guess I left it a little too long to submit.

As of the 10th October 2008 - That’s the end of the ‘Collection’.

They plan to concentrate on their global backup service - ‘Personal Archive’ - Here’s part of the statement they popped on their site...

“Today, we regret to announce our plans to close The PhotoShelter Collection, our stock photography marketplace, effective October 10, 2008.

Going forward, PhotoShelter will focus our energy and resources on enhancing the PhotoShelter Personal Archive our original product that today provides thousands of photographers worldwide with bulletproof backup storage and robust ecommerce capabilities for managing image sales online. We will continue our commitment to developing new ways to use technology to advance the art and business of photography......”

There is also early news (rumors) that Corby are laying off staff and downsizing (looking for efficiencies I believe is the corporate speak for it). So, what will this mean for the stock industry? Do we care - should we care?

Ironically the one company that appeared to actually provide a beneficial mechanism for stock images for both the photographer and the end client has hit a brick wall. I’ve never been too sure as to the benefits of stock work to us, the photographer. But these guys seemed to have hit a sweet spot that I was comfortable with - Evidently, the industry as a whole isn’t as forward thinking...
