I found the Air Sharing application for the iPhone about a month ago - which was rather lucky as it was free then. And I have to say that it has been one of the most useful applications I have used on the iPhone to date.
Given that it is currently on sale for the holiday season - I'd highly recommend taking a look at it.
So what is it? How is it any good for a photographer? Read more after the jump - Go on, click the link, you know you want to...
The official description in the store is...
With Air Sharing, you can:
- • Mount your iPhone or iPod touch as a wireless drive on any Mac, Windows, or Linux computer.
- • Drag-drop files between your iPhone or iPod touch and your computers.
- • View documents in many common formats.
-
- • Familiar Finder-like file browser
- • Prominent display of available space
- • Use of Bonjour and WebDAV (like iDisk) for easy connection
- • Extensive in-line Help with detailed, simple instructions
- • Controls to prevent or to delay iPhone auto-lock
- • Syntax coloring of source code
• Advanced image viewer
- • Stable, high-quality viewing of very high-resolution image files
- • Configurable image slideshow
- • Next and Previous buttons in image viewer
• Fast access
- • Page Up and Down buttons that accelerate while held down
- • A folder popup for going back to previously viewed folders
- • Automatic jump to last viewed location when opening a long document
• Security
- • Optional password protection
- • Public folder for guest access
- • Local passcode lock for app security
So what does that actually mean? Simply put, it means that you can use the application as a briefcase for your documents, images, videos to take with you wherever you happen to be in a secure manner. Then the really cool part, is you can share anything you want with anyone you want over any wireless network.
An example being - I have a contract that I want a client to review and a series of proof of concept images plus the model release form. I am in their office, I open Air Sharing and then they simply access the files via their web browser or if on a mac, simply mount the phone as a server. And while they are in there, they decide to take a copy of my CV and client recommendations.
It takes seconds and I can vouch for the fact that it impresses the socks off the client - Be aware though - You will spend the next 10 minutes demoing the application and then another 10 minutes demoing the iPhone, if they don't already have one.
Given I must have sold countless iPhones for Apple and quite a few copies of this application all by giving live demos on request - I really think I am probably due some form of commission by now ;-)
For the price, this app is a no-brainer and an incredibly useful tool to have with you. If you can think of key documents you have had where you have often said - I'll email it to you when I am back at the office - That can quite literally be a thing of the past with this tool. And then some...
I know this all sounds like a sales pitch - and it is in a way - but only because I have found it so useful and impressive a little tool in both my business and personal life, I just had to share and let others know about it.
I was lucky. I got it for free - But, I'd happily have paid the full price for it. So the discount price would just have been a bonus.
Nice review. Your commission check is in the mail. ;-)
By the way, when you said "Click here to see it in the ITUBES App Store," were you typing with a cold?
Cheers!
