This might be a wise investment... ;-)
Well, not really - But this little gem of equipment (dirt on sensor issue aside) continues to amaze me, even after having it for a couple of years. Why? For one simple reason - It appears to be pretty water-proof!
Here's the tale with a lesson I no-doubt won't learn...
The other evening I was sitting out on the back porch, whiskey in hand just playing with the Camera - Nothing unusual in that. I often do. Although I have to admit to having had a few more drinks this time round that I would normally.
Anyway. I had fun and returned to comfort of my Ikea bouncy chair and accompanying foot stool.
The next morning, this time with a caffeinated beverage in hand and a cigarette in the other (I know, I should quit). I was once again sat out on the back porch. As I watched the fields out back slowly light up as the sun showed its face over the hills and the start of a lovely spring morning began sang in by a chorus of song from the local ornithology. Slowly, my eye was drawn to a sparking object on the patio table glistening in its coating of dense morning dew as the occasional ray of sun caught it.
Then with a pause in my heart rate - The realisation sunk in... It was my G9 and I had left it out all night.
Not only was it drenched in dew, I know for a fact that it had rained, although very lightly as I headed up for bed the previous night (I hadn't had that much).
So there was my trusty pocket warrior sat reflecting in the gloss coating and menisculed droplets of water that covered our oak outdoor dining table. Absolutely bloody soaking wet!
Now - I am very lucky as a pro to have a wide variety of photographic hardware at my disposal from top end Canons to a couple of Hasselblads. So in the grand scheme of things, it most certainly could have been worse. But I love this little snappy chappy as he is always there when I need him and I have caught some fantastic shots with it too.
Like they say "the best camera in the world, is the one that you have with you".
So maintaining the calmness of a fighter pilot having had No.1 & No.2 engines flame out - I stuck to the obvious procedure and resisted all urges to turn it on to see if the poor little thing still worked. And headed in a business like manner up to our airing cupboard and popped it on the shelf just above the hot water tank.
And there it remained for the next 18 hours. Enclosed in a room of comforting warmth, slowly but surely evaporating every last drop of water that accumulated on and possibly in the G9.
And when the switch was eventually flied to power it up - Everything worked exactly as it has the day before...
So should you ever find yourself in a similar position where you little pocket baby decides to take a shower or a swim. Don't despair - All is not necessarily lost. Just keep a calm head and resist temptation and you may just avoid having to go through all that crap with the insurance companies and then have to wait for a hike in your insurance premiums the following year for more than the damn thing was worth in the first place.
[UPDATE: Please don't ask how or why - But it also appears that if you accidentally leave it in the fridge for two days it'll be just fine too. Just in case you really needed ton know that}
